It was a hard decision to make. I had to ask my sister repeatedly if it was alright. But now it's final: I'm quitting nanowrimo just a few hundred words shy of 30,000. Why? Because it's not fun anymore. Because I feel like I'm just tiptoeing through the story, unable to go into depth, and yet nothing much is happening. Because in spite of my resolutions not to, I still managed to incorporate war into the plot. Because I don't think it will turn into my thesis, and I want to focus my attentions elsewhere. Yes, a litany of excuses. Basically: it's not fun anymore.
The end of one thing is the beginning of another. It won't be a 50,000 novel written in 30 days, but I still want to have something by the end of the year, a start on my dreaded thesis. And I want it to be funny.
It is difficult to be funny in English, easier to use Filipino, which lends itself better to our screwed up viewpoints. Unfortunately I'm stuck to Fiction in English for my big T. My models: Bob Ong, Terry Pratchett, Ron Koertge, David Lubar and Patricia Wrede. I still want to write that fantasy.
So last night we sort of had a brainstorm, my sisters and I. We came up with such outlandish ideas as giant sarimanoks at the airport, Edud as president (the man with a hundred wives, all of them with shoe fetishes), AU or Alternate/Albularyo University, City of Los Bathrooms, guerrilla art war, a hero named Hero, a medicine man who uses deodorant to cure sicknesses, etc. Feed me more! :)
